<br />

autumn 2010 started the demolition of the former Dar es Salaam art house Nyumba ya Sanaa (NYS)
in order to build a bank-building on that plot. After the
NYS-building was torn down the concrete roof-edge-slabs (also called frieze
plates or fresco panels or stucco portico) and metal gates that were drafted by
George Lilanga 1982 for this building were stored outside at a garbage place. Since
the demolition plans became known, besides the Hamburg Mawingu Collection
nobody in Tanzania
or elsewhere was interested in that works of Lilanga. After nearly two years in summer 2012 the
HMC finally was successful to acquire a series of roof plates and the metal gates
and to save them from the loss and destruction. Because the items were in very
bad condition by order of the HMC they were restored by a Dar es Salaam Fundi workshop in a lavish way.</span></i></b></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span>
besucht.</b></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><i><span style="font-size: large;"><b><span lang="EN-GB">Here we
show a quite particular example of an artwork of Francis Imanjama from 1993. It
was made as a Monoprint Chine Colle on wove paper. Imanjama not only was inspired by Lilanga.
Rather he used an original etching of Lilanga from 1980 and integrated it into
his own work. The Imanjama print (9 3/4 x 7 1/2 inch) belongs to a small series with same design and
same arrangement of the used ornaments. But it seems that this print – as same
as the Lilanga work – is turned upside down. However, in addition at the left
picture edge one can see an upright head and upper body which the other prints
of this series don’t have. It can be assumed that Imanjama with this portrayal
wanted to astonish the experts who know the Lilanga etching and so he titled
his print "Maajabu" which means wonder or surprise.</span></b></span></i></span><br />

(15.7.2012)</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><i><span lang="EN-GB">The
painting "With The Eye Doctor" from 1998 belongs to the most known
Lilanga paintings. The size is 68 x 115

age and was obviously not at all happy over it. Interestingly, the painting doesn't
have any title on the rear of the canvas. However, a title-statement "Eye
Doctor" in small writing is found on the original-framework of African
hardwood. The inventory number of the HMC: George Lilanga Collection is HMC-L-00222
-98. The painting belongs to the rare ones from which there are photos together
with Lilanga at a time as he still was with moderately good health. The Hamburg
Mawingu Collection used the painting for the cover of the 2005 directly after
the death of Lilanga published work directory and made it world-famous with it
(July 15th 2012).</span></i></span></div>

</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small;"><i>Since many years the <b>HMC: George Lilanga Collection (Department of Research)</b> is doing researches to life and work of George Lilanga. Now the collection was successful to acquire a <span style="font-size: large;"><b style="color: yellow;">series of up to now unknown and not published etchings</b></span> of the artist. The etchings were created during the stays of Lilanga in the early 1990s in Kenya as order-works and appeared only now again. These works prove again that the graphic work (particularly the etchings) had decisively artistic influence on the also famous colored paintings. Lilanga started with etchings in the late 1970s and became a master in the 1980s. Till now he is one of the quite few contemporary African artists, who worked with this technique.</i></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

Als Hauptdrahzieher gilt Osama bin Laden. Von 2003 stammt die Lilanga-Figur <b style="color: yellow;">„</b><span style="font-size: large;"><b><span style="color: yellow;"></span><span style="color: yellow;">Osama – Schlimme Dinge werden geschehen“</span></b></span><b style="color: yellow;"> </b>(Inv.-Nr. HMC-Li-Fc-00310-03).
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><i>In the summer 1998 a heavy bomb attack against the U.S. embassy in Dar es Salaam cause numerous dead and hurt persons. Osama bin Laden is regarded as the main responsible person. The Lilanga figure titled <span style="font-size: large;"><b style="color: yellow;">"Osama – Bad things will come“</b></span> is from 2003 (Inv.-No. HMC-Li-Fc-00310-03). With this figure Lilanga portray Osama bin laden. The special of this work is the bird sedentary on the head. From a translation imprecision of Lilanga's description it was to be assumed at first that this should be a vulture. In fact this bird is known from the Makonde mythology as the bad luck bird liquiqui (Kimakonde: myqui, also quiqui [H. Grote 1912]). This bird belongs to the hornbills of the genus Tokos (Tockus; Lophocerus) that is widespread also in Tanzania's south. Grote [1912] describes the bird as </i><i>„strange awkwardly as it is carved of wood“ (Nov 14th 2010).</i><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal"><i>1989 was a very important year for the artistic development of George Lilanga. From 1974 on Lilanga was a leading member of the Nyumba ya Sanaa artist group in Dar es Salaam. From this time he created his Shetani art in close cooperation and mutual inspiration with Augostino Malaba. The artistic media untill then were mainly sketches, drawings, batiks, goat skins and etchings but still no coloured paintings. This changes in 1989. Lilanga got the possibility to create a <span style="font-size: large;"><b style="color: yellow;">big coloured mural with his Shetanis</b></span> in the entrance area of the former <span style="font-size: large;"><b style="color: yellow;">German Goethe Institute</b></span>. For this painting he used a lot of his types, scenes and motives known from his sketches, drawings and of course his impressive etchings. Those were the pattern for his stairwell mural with at least <span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: large;"><b style="color: yellow;">a size of about 10 x 2 meters</b></span>.</span> After the closure of the Goethe Institute in 1998 the mural turned into oblivion and finally it was scaped off and painted over. So this important work of the artist George Lilanga was irretrievably lost. Today photos only exist, e.g. in the Lilanga research archive of the Hamburg Mawingu Collection (Dec 18th 2010).</i><br />
