“With The Eye Doctor”: the famous Lilanga Painting
The
painting "With The Eye Doctor" from 1998 belongs to the most known
Lilanga paintings. The size is 68 x 115
cm. Presumably the painting shows Lilanga himself who had to use glasses in the
age and was obviously not at all happy over it. Interestingly, the painting doesn't
have any title on the rear of the canvas. However, a title-statement "Eye
Doctor" in small writing is found on the original-framework of African
hardwood. The inventory number of the HMC: George Lilanga Collection is HMC-L-00222
-98. The painting belongs to the rare ones from which there are photos together
with Lilanga at a time as he still was with moderately good health. The Hamburg
Mawingu Collection used the painting for the cover of the 2005 directly after
the death of Lilanga published work directory and made it world-famous with it
(July 15th 2012).
George Lilanga "visited" his Hamburg Art Week 2012 exhibition "Inside...Africa...Outside"
An uncommon presentation on the Hamburg Art Week 2012: George Lilanga, to which the exhibition "Inside...Africa...Outside" of the Hamburg Mawingu Collection (HMC) was dedicated, greeted the interested visitors ... as sculpture, 2005/2006 carved on order of the HMC by his uncle, the known Tanzanian wood-sculptor Agustino Malaba.

George Lilanga mit/with Shetani: Hamburg Art Week 2012
Gezeigt werden u.a.
The
Hamburg Mawingu Collection (HMC) created the art exhibition George Lilanga: Inside...Africa...Outside
that is shown at the Hamburg Art Week 2012.
With the exhibition George
Lilanga: Inside…Africa…Outside the
Hamburg Mawingu Collection wants to appreciate not only the African
artist George Lilanga. The aim is also to remind of the art house Nyumba ya
Sanaa in Dar es Salaam/Tanzania. In 1982 Lilanga created a row of exceptionally and
culturally important artworks for the inner and outside area of the renewed
Nyumba ya Sanaa. Unfortunately end of 2010 the House of Art was torn down and
Tanzania lost one of its most world-known and important cultural institutions. The exhibition will show Lilanga masterpieces,
special art works from the art house which the artist considered to his most
important. Date: 1. - 10. June 2012 Exhibition place: Brücke - Ökumenisches Forum HafenCity Shanghaiallee 12 (directly opposite the Automobiles Museum)
